  • 7 Beauty Tips To Achieve and Maintain Glowing Winter Skin

    glowing winter skin

Winter is the season that forces us to take extra care of our skin. It’s the time of the year when the cold weather sucks all the moisture from our skin, making it look dry and unhealthy. So in order to have glowing winter skin, we first have to have a good winter skincare routine. Below, I’m going to share some beauty suggestions that can help you get glowing skin this winter season.

Make Sure You Spent Some Time Outside Each Day

You might not believe this, but your skin can benefit a lot if you have a healthy outdoor routine. If you want some tips on dry skin care in winter, this tip will help you out a lot. Even if you hate being out in the cold, you should consider getting out of the house once a day. Working out each day is, in general, a great way to ensure you are physically healthy. If you don’t want to work out, you should go out on a walk or do some kind of activity. Just like in the summer, being out of the house will allow your skin to breathe and maintain it’s moisture levels.

    Use A Good Winter Moisturizer

Being in the cold makes it easier for your skin to lose its natural oil which is not a good thing. One of the most important things you need in your winter skincare is to moisturize your skin as often as possible. It’s necessary to choose the correct winter face moisturizer – you have to pick one that perfectly suits your skin type and needs.

Search for the most popular brand and select it only after making sure that it is suitable for you. Once you have that, make it a habit to apply the moisturizer at least twice a day. If you can, you should speak to a skincare expert to help you pick the best moisturizer for winter.

Consume Plenty Of Water To Prevent Skin Dehydration

The cold weather makes it difficult for us to choose water over other delicious beverage options like coffee, hot chocolate, etc. We also don’t feel as thirsty in winter, so we forget to drink enough water during the day. Though this might not affect other parts of your body, your skin tends to suffer the most because of this.

Your body, on the other hand, loses water in more than one way, and it has no way to gain it back if you don’t drink water. Drinking a good amount of water is an excellent way to ensure glowing skin in the winter. So to provide the best winter care for your face, remind yourself to drink water.

Try To Spend Less Time In The Shower Or Anywhere Too Hot

Since we crave warmth so much in the cold season, we love to take long showers and use hot water on our skin. In reality, that’s one thing you should stop doing to avoid dull skin in winter.

As part of your new winter skincare routine, you should shower for no more than 15 minutes. Instead of using hot water to wash your hands and face, use lukewarm water as to not harm your skin. The secret to a glowing face in winter is to avoid exposing yourself to extremely hot temperatures. Also when you dry your skin, make sure to not dry it too much so you don’t take away all the moisture, and please make sure you apply body cream immediately afterward.

    Pay Attention To Your Diet

Whether you wish to be physically healthy or want healthy skin, your diet can help you out a lot. Eating nutritious food is just as important as drinking a lot of liquids in the winter. Our eating habits tend to change a lot in the cold so we need to regulate it more smartly.

In case your skin lacks nutrition, it can gain it from the food you eat. Eating proper food is one way to moisturize your skin and avoid dull skin in winter. This is why you should ensure that you eat healthy meals to keep your skin glowing.

Picking The Right Winter Skincare Routine For You

Just like everything else in life, it is essential to have a winter skincare routine to treat your skin properly in this season. There is a lot that can damage your skin, so you need to follow a special routine to prevent dull skin in winter.

You need to wash your face at least 2 times a day to get rid of all the dirt and chemicals. Whenever you have free time, try applying face masks to hydrate and treat your skin. Use good quality winter skincare products that will nourish your skin. Use lotions and moisturizers after waking up and before going to bed. Including these small things in your winter routine will enable you to take care of your sensitive skin in the harsh weather. Remember products that may work well on others may not have the same effect on you. Please be sure to research ingredients and test products before applying them to your face and body.

Winter Isn’t The Time To Say No To Sunscreen

Winter days are often cloudy and you might think now is the correct time to say goodbye to sunscreen. But no, even on dark winter days, you still have to protect your skin from dangerous sun rays. The main reason behind that is winter clouds are not enough to keep UV rays away from your skin.

Since you can’t just sit at home to avoid the sun altogether, you should apply SPF 20 or higher sunscreen before leaving the house. Sunscreen is one of the winter skincare products that most people don’t think of as important. Make sure to carry it along with you and apply it throughout the day for a lasting effect.

A lot of people hate the winter season because it’s easy to have dull skin in winter but it doesn’t have to be that way. I’ve given essential tricks and tips that will change how some feel about their winter skin. Overall, I hope these help you to create a better winter skincare routine and take care of yourself in a much better way.

  • Five Beauty & Wellness Goals I’m Setting For The New Year

Sometime this year I decided I was gonna start taking better care of myself. I’ve been feeling and looking really rundown (which I’ll get into why in a future post). I went from being a hot mess but still presentable to looking like I didn’t give a fuck about life. I put on more weight, my skin is dull, and my hair is thinning. I needed to make a drastic change in my life, and fast!

Now I’m not sure of the date I started it but I slowly started implementing new routines, and I vowed these would be my New Year goals. And because all of these goals are connected they’ll be easy for me to do. And another great thing is because I started weeks before the New Year I’ve already seen some small but noticeable changes. It lets me know I’m on the right track and I need to keep up the good work.

My Five Beauty & Wellness Goals Are:

    Taking care of my skin

I’m nearing 40 and there’s one thing I haven’t been doing on a consistent basis, and that’s taking care of my skin. I’ll take a hot shower and be lazy about moisturizing my body or not exfoliating. Then a day or two later wonder my skin feels like sandpaper or why my face is breaking out.

So starting back in November I began making a conscious effort of taking better care of my skin. I started misting my face with PearlEssence rose water, applying body butter, using soaps and facial serums that bring that heal and moisturize my skin.

    More water less soda

Speaking of taking better care of my skin, I’ve cut soda almost entirely out of my diet. I say almost as I still like the taste of ginger ale and drink it a few times a month. But for the most part, I drink water and teas (hot and cold).

I don’t know when I cut back on my soda intake or what prompted it, but it’s a major step as I loved soda. And the results have been great. My face doesn’t break out as much, my stomach has gotten slightly smaller and my jeans aren’t as snug. Yay!

    Growing out my nails

I started growing them a while ago but stress and nerves got to me and I fell back into the bad habit of picking at my nails. And since I know what they look like grown out with a coat of paint, I need to curb the urge to pick at that them.

Going to weekly meditation and yoga classes

I rejoined ClassPass. After seeing MDFL on their list of studios I knew I had to sign up, and that free month ClassPass offered was nice too. My plan is to get my mind, body, and spirit right by visiting various local yoga and meditation studios.

Last year taught me I’m more into quiet reflection time and not traditional workout classes. While I know I need to get more active as I get older, I also know I need to be active doing things I don’t dread.

    Protective styling my hair

This is going to be the hardest of all because I really hate twisting/braiding my hair. Natualista’s know this struggle. It’s time-consuming with your arms and hands aching soon after starting. But not doing so will continue to be a contributing factor toward my hair loss.

I wear my afro out all the time even to bed and the results are massive tangles, dryness, and breakage. You may not be able to tell cause my hair is so fluffy but I can feel the loss in my scalp. With protective styling, I can prevent tangles and breakage by styling my hair which will allow my hair to grow and flourish.

Going to bed at a decent time

I have a hard time keeping a regular bedtime. My bedtime ranges between 11pm and 2am. I’ve always been a night owl so going to sleep late mentally is okay with me but I physically regret it each morning. Thankfully my nighttime routine is pretty solid so at least I’m not having any trouble getting to sleep.

  • I Quit Nail-Biting After 30 Years, and with These Easy Tips You’ll Stop Too!

    nail-biting mommyrandr valerie pierre

So you’re a nail-biter. Yeah, me too. I’ve been biting my nails for as long as I can remember. Despite my social butterfly exterior, on the interior, I’m quite the nervous nellie. How I became this way I do not know, but what I do know is, I cope with this nervousness by nail-biting.

I was bad when it came to this. I would bite, pick and peel them. When I drew blood I vowed to stop but it wouldn’t last long. I was embarrassed by my hands, always hiding them. But it took one chance event that would change my nail-biting urge forever….ok, for the last 30 plus days.

How did I overcome my urge for nail-biting, and how can these tips help you?

    I got a mani

This is how it started. I found myself in a pickle last month as I needed to get some professional photos taken of me for business purposes. The photographer told me, “Val get your nails done because your nails now are not gonna cut it.” So I took my ass to a neighborhood spot over on Myrtle Ave in Brooklyn and got a mani.

nail biting valerie pierre mommy r+r mommyrandr

While I wasn’t feeling my mani at all that didn’t stop something from triggering in me to decide from that moment on I would STOP biting my nails.

Listen, I’ve been making this same pledge for about 30 years and I only managed it once for my wedding in 2008. Sadly my newly grown nails wouldn’t see my honeymoon as I clipped them off before the end of the night.

So why the sudden change now? For one, I overall liked the way my hands looked. I had grown woman hands and it completed the look of my hand with my wedding ring. Secondly, after two weeks with the silk wraps, I was able to overcome the feeling that comes along with having nails. It’s a weightiness and the ability to feel the nail on the tips of my fingers. It’s this feeling (along with that nervous inner voice) which causes me to peel and clip my nails. But because I had spent money to get my nails done I was less inclined to pick at them, although I did Google ‘how to remove silk wraps’.

But I stayed the course and kept them for a full two weeks, and removed them as I saw it was time to let them go. Now the true test would begin. Besides mani’s, what other ways could I keep my nail-biting tick at bay?

    Paint my nails

The first thing I did after removing the tips was file my nails and paint them. I used Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Hardner (cause that’s all I had), and they looked good. But something was missing. So I decided to shop for some nail color. It’s fall so I chose Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in two shades: Blackjack and Queen of Hearts and after a couple of applications, my nails looked fantastic! It’s amazing how much growth one can get over 14 days.

With my nails freshly painted I knew I didn’t wanna do anything to fuck them up. So I became more mindful of the activities I was doing so I wouldn’t chip them. I had the urge to pick at them but how shiny and healthy my hands looked kept me from getting my clippers.

nail biting valerie pierre mommy r+r mommyrandr

    Keep my hands busy

If you’re looking to keep your nails intact then you need to keep your hands busy. I have a fidget spinner that I keep at my desk and when I feel the urge to pick at my nails, which is all the time, I whip out my spinner and give it a whirl. It gives my hands the needed distraction that will deter me from focusing on my nails.

    Keep my nails manageable

I plan on keeping my nails around this length. The shorter they are the less maintenance I will have. But if they get longer they’ll become a distraction. I’m already finding myself obsess over how my thumbnail clicks against my phone screen. There’s something about that sound that intrigues me. Also, by keeping my nails at a certain length means I can continue to do my own mani’s in between salon visits.

    Remember to take my vitamins

The day after I got the silk wraps I carried my ass down to Target for some Hair, Nail and Skin vitamins. I got the gummy kind as those are the only ones I will remember to take, cause candy. These 3 little gummy squares a day is giving my body the extra boost of vitamins it needs to keep my hair healthy, my skin clear and my nails super strong.

Take it one day at a time

The fact is while your nails grow quickly, it will take time to get them where you want them. So instead of worrying about how much time it will take for your nails can touch your palms when clenching a fist, celebrate not being able to remember when you last clipped and picked with your nails.

Are you ready to take the challenge?

So if you’re ready to end your nail-biting urges join me on my 30 Day Nail Biting Challenge. Just because I made it 30 days so far that doesn’t mean I’m completely out of the woods. This simple calendar (which is downloadable) will keep you on track of your progress. Check off each day you keep your nails intact. Celebrate your milestone at the end of the month, and every month after that. If you slip up, it’s okay. Start over as many times as you need till it becomes a way of life.
